From Contact Print to Camera

1. The Contact Process of Heliography (1822)

In 1822, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce achieved the first photographic image that could be permanently fixed: a copy of a copper engraving, made through direct light contact on a bitumen-coated metal plate.

It wasn’t the first photograph in the world in today’s sense – but it was proof that light can permanently inscribe an image into matter.

This process – the contact process of heliography – is the oldest known functioning photographic process. It did not arise from a desire to depict the world, but from a practical goal: to mechanically copy prints without having to engrave them by hand.

2. The Oldest Surviving Photograph in the World (1827)

In the summer of 1827, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce set up a camera obscura at the window of his study at the Le Gras estate in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, France, and exposed a pewter plate coated with bitumen for several days.

What emerged is the oldest permanently surviving photograph in the world: Point de vue du Gras – a view across the courtyard, in which the sun appears to shine from both left and right at once, having moved across the sky over the course of the multi-day exposure.

The image is now held at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. It measures 16.5 × 21 cm, is fixed on a pewter plate, and shows – depending on the viewing angle – either a negative or a positive. It exists once. There is no copy.

Between the two processes lie five years and a shift in direction: from reproducing an existing image to capturing a real, witnessed moment.
