Héliographies pour mes fils

200 ans de photographie : la plus ancienne photographie « vit » parmi nous depuis deux siècles. Voici la recette de « l’éternité » :

Dissolvez 3 grammes d’asphalte de Syrie dans 15 ml d’huile de lavande. Attendez quelques jours. Appliquez l’émulsion au pinceau sur une plaque de fer-blanc. Laissez sécher l’émulsion sur une plaque de fonte chaude pendant environ 20 minutes. Exposez la plaque au soleil pendant deux à trois jours. Rincez l’émulsion d’asphalte non durcie à l’essence de térébenthine ou à l’huile de lavande.

Joseph Nicéphore Niépce nomma ce procédé héliographie. Il le décrivit en 1829 dans sa Notice sur l’Héliographie. C’était le premier procédé photographique dans lequel une image saisie par la chambre noire fut fixée durablement sur une plaque métallique. Niépce a disparu depuis longtemps. L’image demeure.

Les héliographies présentées ici ont été réalisées entre février et décembre 2017, pendant mon traitement contre le cancer. Je les ai faites pour mes fils, dans les mois où les mots me manquaient. La lumière et l’ombre sont devenues mon langage. Le carnet, lui, est resté vide.

Ce n’est qu’en 2019 que j’ai trié, titré et encadré ces œuvres. L’occasion en fut l’exposition au festival Interphoto de Białystok, en Pologne — cofinancée par le ministère polonais de la Culture. Toutes les œuvres portent la date de 2019 : le moment où elles sont sorties de la sphère privée pour devenir art.

Mon épouse et moi attendons les résultats de mon scanner. La salle d’attente est étroite. À gauche, une grande fenêtre. En face, deux portes : Cabine 1, Cabine 2. Silence. Les personnes assises ici ne parlent pas…

I-Cancer 13.10.2017

Cette œuvre marque une rencontre profonde entre technique historique et expérience personnelle. Je l’ai réalisée selon le procédé original de l’héliographie développé par Joseph Nicéphore Niépce en 1822/1827 — la première méthode photographique durable au monde. Ce procédé utilise de l’asphalte de Syrie (bitume de Judée), dissous dans l’huile de lavande, appliqué sur une plaque de fer-blanc et exposé au soleil pendant plusieurs heures.

Cette œuvre appartient à la série Pour les siècles des siècles, héliographies pour mes fils, et fut réalisée pendant l’annonce de mon diagnostic de cancer, en 2017. Née d’un moment de crise existentielle, elle est devenue une méditation sur la permanence et l’héritage.
