The Story Behind “Centre Pompidou, Midday”

The image was captured in August 2013 on Rue Beaubourg in Paris, caught by the passing Google camera at the edge of the Centre Pompidou. Three white ventilation pipes rise like futuristic sculptures, and in front of them a lone passerby — casual, almost lost against the scale of the architecture.

A fleeting moment of urban choreography, carrying with it Barthes’ phrase: “It has been.” The passerby was there, on that day, in that light — unrepeatable, and yet preserved within the image.
